Amazing Silk Flowers

For Texas florists, fall means fatigue from phones ringing off the hook, and customers in search of one very hot commodity.

"Everyone woke up Monday and realized oh its Homecoming Week I've got to go order a mum or garter," Aya Metocha of Bastrop Florists said.

It's madness for mums across town, Metocha and her partner Sandy Smith crafted close to two hundred amazing silk flowers for the kids of Bastrop High.

Homecoming is almost as big for Central Texas florists as Valentine's Day.

"You know sometimes it's almost like they take it as serious as ordering wedding flowers. Sometimes the mums just get that serious," Metocha said.

Each job requires special attention: from curling ribbon to gluing on trinkets that jingle when you walk.

"We have to pay a lot of attention on the orders of what goes where, and some girls get really specific about where they want their things hanging on their mums," Smith said.

"The long hours and the tired feet and burned fingers are all worth it when they get tears in their eyes and pick it up and tell you how beautiful they are and when the little girls come and give you a big hug. It's worth it," Metocha said.
